چکیده

We review here the Grassmann variety, Schubert cells, Schubert subvarieties and then Schubert cycles and how to compute their product. We then review vector bundles over the sphere, clutching functions and the universal bundle.

Decoding of Subspace Codes, a Problem of Schubert Calculus over Finite Fields

Schubert calculus provides algebraic tools to solve enumerative problems. There have been several applied problems in systems theory, linear algebra and physics which were studied by means of Schubert calculus. The method is most powerful when the base field is algebraically closed. In this article we first review some of the successes Schubert calculus had in the past. Then we show how the pro...

Introduction to Tensor Calculus

Preface These are general notes on tensor calculus originated from a collection of personal notes which I prepared some time ago for my own use and reference when I was studying the subject. I decided to put them in the public domain hoping they may be beneficial to some students in their effort to learn this subject. Most of these notes were prepared in the form of bullet points like tutorials...

Experimentation in the Schubert Calculus

Many aspects of Schubert calculus are easily modeled on a computer. This enables large-scale experimentation to investigate subtle and ill-understood phenomena in the Schubert calculus. A well-known web of conjectures and results in the real Schubert calculus has been inspired by this continuing experimentation. A similarly rich story concerning intrinsic structure, or Galois groups, of Schuber...

The Poor Man’s Introduction to Tensors

When solving physical problems, one must often choose between writing formulas in a coordinate independent form or a form in which calculations are transparent. Tensors are important because they allow one to write formulas in a manner that is both coordinate independent and transparent in performing calculations. In these notes, I provide an informal introduction to tensors (in Euclidean space...

Stanley Symmetric Functions and Peterson Algebras

These are (mostly) expository notes for lectures on affine Stanley symmetric functions given at the Fields Institute in 2010. We focus on the algebraic and combinatorial parts of the theory. The notes contain a number of exercises and open problems. Stanley symmetric functions are a family {Fw | w ∈ Sn} of symmetric functions indexed by permutations. They were invented by Stanley [Sta] to enume...
